The Masterpiece Continued
Network Extensions 3 is a continuation of the venerable Network Extensions 2, which needs no introduction. It is a generous collection of roads, several of which have been published by Colossal Order as paid DLC, inspired by this mod. You can get them for free with this mod, or pay for a subset of them via DLC.
This is a drop in replacement; just unsubscribe Network Extensions 2, subscribe this one, enable it in the Content Manager, and keep on building. Enjoy!
I am taking over maintenance of this work because it appears the original authors are unresponsive. They themselves had taken over maintenance from the original creator when he stopped playing. Long live open source, and thank you, original dude Katalyst6[github.com]!.
This collection of networks has stood the test of time because it's an exceptionally well engineered piece of software, unlike so many fly-by-night attempts to imitate.
Advantage over discrete road collections
The main advantage of using this network pack over individual network or even asset collections is optimized memory usage. This mod remixes textures and object data as needed, and does not waste memory on duplicating imperceptibly similar textures. A non-negligible benefit of shared data is that CPU and GPU load will be diminished, by having to move less data around in memory, leaving more compute resources available for simulation or other assets.
Update v1.0.2 - Cable Stay Bridges are BACK!
Bugfixes
Cable Stay Bridges are fixed (were broken since Sunset Harbor)
Wooden Pillars for elevated boardwalks are fixed (broken since SH)
Bollards at the end of pedestian walkways are fixed (broken since SH)
Missing Roads when both NE2 and NE3 were subscribed are fixed. Next2 and Next3 can now be subscribed together, but not enabled together (useful for A/B tests)
Ne2 assets that were placed manually with NE2 will now be automatically recognized
Other Changes
The 6 assets are now internalized, they will no longer appear in the Content Manager. The mod will load them automatically.
NE3 can now co-exist with NE2 without causing "Duplicate asset". There is no need to unsubscribe one to use the other any more.
Assets are loaded correctly in Local installations.
Directory name for local installations can be anything (please use ZIP archive at GitHub[github.com] for local installs)
Notes
Both bridge pillars and bollards had been broken since the Sunset Harbor update.
Bollards are props, and their placement occurs when the mod creates the road assets as it starts up. If you re-saved a game with NE2 after Sunset Harbor, walkways were missing the bollards all throughout SH, and are still missing with NE2. Starting with NE3 v1.0.2 they are back, no intervention is necessary.
However, bridge pillars are buildings, placed when a road is built. They were removed from the save if not recognized by NE2 at load time. If a game was saved after the pillars were thus removed, they remain missing. NE3 allows them to be placed anew, and it will recognize them in gamesaves from before SH, but any save after SH will not have them. Those saves will need their roads re-placed so the pillars are placed again on the map.
I would be interested to find a gamesave which was last saved with NE2 prior to Sunset Harbor. Perhaps one with few mods / assets, so I can test that NE3 can restore those old saves to their full glory. If you know of one, please link it below.
