February 25, 2008 - Once upon a time when large-scale FPS battles were yet in their infancy, a dedicated team of enthusiasts set out to mod the World-War II shooter Battlefield 1942, swapping the antique machinery of Zeroes and Shermans with MIGs and Abrams tanks. The high-powered rifles and brutal balance drew a fresh crop of players, prompting the team to continue refining their mod to polished perfection.

Fast forward to the present day, and the niche of big-battle FPS games has widened significantly--EA pumps out Battlefield titles, and the makers of Wolfenstein recently released Quake Wars: Enemy Territory. The Desert Combat modders have since formed Kaos Studios, and are finishing up their latest FPS title, Frontlines: Fuel of War. But in the midst of the increasingly crowded field of near-future shooters, does the game have what it takes to make its mark?

At first glance, it's a somewhat familiar sight: helicopters almost resembling Comanche choppers and Blackhawks, rifles looking like a high-tech version of G36 assault rifles. But as with Desert Combat, it's what's underneath the bump-mapped surface--gameplay--that counts. Here are three things that has Frontlines: Fuel of War trying to push the envelope of shoot-em-up convention.

Frontlines aims to discourage such reckless neophyte abandon in a variety of ways. For one, vehicles use a shared-targeting system that allows players within the same vehicle to have double the radar-awareness. The game also has squad leaders, who serve as mobile spawn points, allow for radar to be shared, and can issue orders as well as set waypoints for squad mates.

Recent games have made vehicle control easier, at expense of finesse and fancy maneuvering. That's to purportedly change with Frontlines. Although those new to the game can still have a decent control over helicopters, there's still a nod to the hardcore pilot/driver by offering sophisticated control mechanics.

And with Predator drones buzzing the skies of war zones in real life, it seems especially fitting that the technology would exist in a near-future shooter such as Frontlines. Depending on faction class ranking, you have a variety of gadgets at your disposal, from unmanned helicopters on the Red Star side to a mini-armored vehicle with a 7.62mm mini-gun with the Western Coalition. Death comes super-sized--and super shrunk.
