“We’ve reached a point where science and technology have advanced at an exponential rate for so long… that it may be far beyond our ability to regulate and control it.”
This quote is from the TV Show “Fringe” by the fictional character named Nina Sharp, to some extent, I feel it just might be the truth.
On January 12, a 16-years-old Chinese girl named Yuting Zeng vanished without a trace. The next day, her body were discovered by the police in a Shenzhen junk yard. What could have possibly caused this tragic incident? Upon investigation, it is found that Yuting practically posted “her life” online to a twitter-like website called Weibo. Not only did she publish her pictures, status, but also her locations as she went along. It is believed that her murderer stalked her using the locations she published. What’s scarier? Anybody can see her status even without registering.
What happened to her privacy? Sure the lack of self-awareness played a big role in this incident, but without any regulation on the “sharing privacy” part is always dangerous. With a couple of clicks, you can locate a person’s exact location. This is scary even to think about. |
