Content Extraction Guide
The one prerequisite the campaign requires is that you own Half-Life 2. This is for two reasons:

1. Half-Life 2 is copyrighted by Valve and I'm sure they wouldn't appreciate it if I distributed all their content.

2. If you own Half-Life 2 you own it's contents on your PC, which need to be extracted to Left 4 dead.

Step 1: Install GCFScape
To extract the files you will first need to install GCFScape, which can be found here: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=26.

IMPORTANT NOTE: by default, GCFScape will associate itself with .vpk files meaning that, whenever you double-click a VPK to install a campaign, GCFScape will open instead. To make sure this doesn't happen, see the screenshot below:

When this screen comes up in the installation, make sure that the "Associate with .vpk files" tickbox is unticked. This will leave the Left 4 Dead campaign install program with default access to the .vpk files, which is what we want.

- Note to mappers -
By following the instructions below, the Half-Life: 2 models and materials will be extracted to the main Left 4 Dead models and materials folders. This will mean that they also show up in Hammer and this could potentially cause problems if the content inadvertently gets included in any Left 4 Dead maps that you make, as the recipients would not have the content available.

If you don't want the Half-Life: 2 content to appear in Hammer, download the zipped version of the campaign from the Downloads page. This needs to be installed before you extract the Half-Life: 2 content. When you extract the content from the GCFs, extract:

Models to left 4 deadleft4deadaddonslambdamodels;

Materials to left 4 deadleft4deadaddonslambdamaterials.

This will make sure that the content is only used by the campaign and not by Hammer. However, you will need to re-extract the files for each version of the campaign that you download.

Step 2: Find and extract the Half-Life: 2 content
Now, go into the folder you installed Steam - by default this should be C:Program FilesSteam - and then go into the steamapps folder. It should look something like this:

Scroll down and look for the two files called source materials.gcf and source models.gcf. In the screenshot they are highlighted in red.

Double-click on source materials.gcf first. GCFScape should open up and look something like this:

The materials folder we need to extract is inside the hl2 folder. It is very important that you don't extract the hl2 folder itself, as the files won't end up in the right places.

Go into the hl2 folder, highlighted in blue in the screenshot, to find the materials folder sitting on its own.

Right-click and select "Extract".

In the next window you will be asked to choose the folder you want to extract to.

In the small window, find the steamapps folder we looked into earlier - by default, C:Program FilesSteamsteamapps - and then go into commonleft 4 deadleft4dead (yes, there are 2 left 4 dead folders). After that, click OK.

Now the Half-Life: 2 textures have been extracted successfully. For the models, follow the same process by opening source models.gcf and extracting the models folder from GCFScape to the commonleft 4 deadleft4dead folder.

Hopefully, after this process, the Half-Life: 2 files should be in the right places. If you are getting any errors, primarily pink/black or transparent walls, or big ERROR signs everywhere, something has gone wrong somewhere. Feel free to e-mail me at jonathan[.]poncelet[@]talk21[.]com and I'll try to help out.
